Four Hidden Gems Near Our York Estate That Most Visitors Miss

4 Secret Places Near York Most Holiday Makers Never Discover | Red House Holiday Lets

Most visitors to York never find these treasures. They stick to the popular spots, the well-worn tourist paths. Our guests often ask us about secret places and spots that locals treasure but tourists overlook. After welcoming families to our historic York estate since 2019, we've gathered some favourites.

1. The Secret River Walk Most Maps Don't Show

Right from our 70-acre estate, few realise that you can access stunning riverside paths. The River Ouse offers peaceful walking routes where wildlife often thrives undisturbed. We have spotted otters playing in the early morning light, deer grazing near the water's edge, and birds you rarely see in busier locations. The path connects to longer routes, but the section near Red House remains wonderfully quiet - this isn't something you'll find in standard guidebooks.

2. The Pretty Village Time Almost Forgot

Just 6 miles from our estate sits a hidden gem, which most drive past without noticing. Nun Monkton retains its ancient character, mentioned in the Domesday Book. Walk along the Priory drive down to the river Ouse or visit the maypole which has been there since the 1790s. Visit on weekday mornings when you might be the only visitors.

3. The Number 1 Ranked Michelin Pub In Yorkshire

The Alice Hawthorn Inn serves what many consider the finest food in Yorkshire. Located in Nun Monkton, this 18th-century pub sits near the river where two waterways meet. Book ahead here, the secret is slowly getting out.

4. The National Trust Country Estate Perfect For The Whole Family

At over 300 years old, Beningborough Hall offers the perfect day out for old and young alike. A National Trust property, it's rich history both inside and out means you can take the time to explore artwork, architecture and nature. You can find out more about what to do and what's going on here.

Why These Places Matter

These hidden gems offer something increasingly rare. When you stay at Red House Holiday Lets, you're not just 8 miles from York and 15 miles from Harrogate, but so much more. Our family has lived on this estate since the 1970s, and we've seen places became tourist hotspots while others remained unspoiled. We love sharing these secrets with our guests.
